Reading Response #4

Dear Marjane,
Your book Persepolis is an amazing work of art and unique way to tell a story. I like the way you show a young girl as yourself growing up in the middle of a situation where the world is falling apart. But you try to doing the right thing by not giving up hope and that women like you and your mother stand up for what they believe in. Your parents are a great influence in who you are today. They live in the twentieth century, they have the money, cars, most important an education, and they are also into politics. This separates them from the Fundamentalist Muslims you dealt with as a child. Your simple illustrations reflect great moments growing up as a child. You show the political demonstrations, the violence towards Iranians, and to your loving parents. You show the truth about what happens from friends being killed and your mother being threatened with rape and murder. You show us that there are good and bad people in this world and the difficulty growing up in a different culture. My questions to you are, “Did you ever feel like the terrible things that were happening around you were ever going to stop?” and “ If you had a chance to change something you did or wish you would of done what would it be?”

Sincerely,
Juan Orozco
